Miss World 1963

Carole Joan Crawford
JAMAICA

Probably the shortest Miss World in the history of the pageant, Jamaica's Carole Joan Crawford, was a 20-year-old model and secretarial help for her father. She was only 5 feet 3 inches. At the finals, she appeared in a specially-designed swimsuit which went right up to her neck at the front and made her look taller. She had won over the judges with her charm, intelligence and beauty. Carole said that becoming Miss World "took away my shyness and made me self-possessed." Her proud country issued a special issue of more than 3 million stamps in her honor. The beautiful Aino Korva of Denmark, who was dubbed as one of the most beautiful delegates of her time, once again came close but did not win the crown. She was fourth. Earlier in the year, she was in the finals of Miss Universe but did not win.
