Mary Ann Catrin Stavin
SWEDEN
The 7 most beautiful women in the world never looked so good! To pick one out of those 7 perfect ladies must have been that toughest job any panel of judges in a beauty pageant has ever had. Miss Sweden, Marie Ann-Catrin Stavins, a farmer's 20-year-old daughter, won the title. "I thought they'd choose anyone but me. I never expected it to be me," the gymnastics student said as she broke down in tears. Germany's Dagmar Winkler was a pageant veteran, having competed in the Miss Universe and Miss International pageants by the time she appeared at Miss World - where she won the Miss Photogenic award. Miss Brazil, Madalena Sbaraini, has been chosen by fellow Brazilians as the most beautiful representative Brazil ever had in a Miss World pageant. Miss United States, Cindy Miller, might also be the most beautiful American to have ever competed in Miss World. The pageant was marred by the second year in a row of walkouts by 10 of the 72 national titleholders in protest against South Africa's apartheid policies. Though there was no longer a black Miss Africa South, a blonde white woman - Vanessa Wannenberg - competed as Miss South Africa. She would be the last South African contestant at Miss World until 1991.
