Puerto Rico's Wilnelia Merced , the last Miss World titleholder to be crowned in a swimsuit, had been modelling for four years before winning the title. Eric Morley's preference was the first runner-up from Germany, but Wilnelia proved to be the better choice after nude photographs of Miss Germany were printed in the morning newspapers. years later Wilnelia would marry British personality Bruce Forsythe. She has been a Miss World judge in several occasions. Among the semi-finalists was the very lovely Miss Saint Lucia, a 19 year-old textile student who remains the only beauty from her Caribbean island to become a Miss World finalist.
