Miss World 1989

Aneta-Beata Kreglicka
POLAND

Poland's Aneta Kreglicka was the first Eastern European to win the Miss World title. She was surprised and shocked at her victory over 77 other competitors in Hong Kong. Thames Television changed its mind at the last minute and broadcast the pageant at home, though time differences and the difficult of finding an appropriate time slot caused it to be shown at after midnight in England. The favorites that night were Misses USA, Australia and Thailand. Misses Mauritius and US Virgin Islands were the only women from their countries to have ever placed in a major international pageant. Vania Thomas of the US Virgin Islands also participated in Miss Universe 1997. Aneta of Poland won the first ever Miss World crown for her country and for Eastern Europe the year the Berlin Wall fell in Germany and Eastern European countries were in a fast transition from communism to capitalism.
