What a great year in beauty pageants 1972 was for Australia! A Miss World crown, a Miss Universe crown, and a first runner-up position in Miss International - a record broken only by India just last year (2000). Belinda Green and her three siblings were brought up by their mother in the poor suburbs of Sydney, after her father died. In the years after her reign as Miss World she was resourceful enough to hitch-hike twice around the world. Nonetheless, the greatest celebrity to come out of that year's pageant was not Belinda, but Miss United State - no other than Lynda Carter, soon to be known as 'Wonder Woman'.
