Astrid Carolina Herrera Irazábal
VENEZUELA
Twelve of the 72 contestants were cross-overs from the Miss Universe pageant, among which semi-finalists from Austria, Finland, Holland and finalists from Australia, Brazil and Ireland. Before the contest Misses Brazil and Ireland had the best odds to take the crown with bookmakers. The winner, Venezuela's Astrid Herrera, also won the Miss Photogenic award. She was the center of a controversy involving animal-rights groups who objected to her being the official pinup of Venezuela's bullfighting sports. Today she's a famous actress in Latin America. Miss Canada, Connie Fitzpatrick, was often compared to Princess Diana. The Canadian contestant had beauty, personality and elegance that would fit any generation of beauty competitions. Miss Australia, Lou-Anne Caroline Ronchi, was a 'Bond girl' in the movie 'A View to Kill'. She also competed in Miss Universe 82 and was not a semi-finalist. Miss Brazil, Adriana Alves de Oliveira, was at the time a successful model in Europe. She placed in 4th in Miss Universe 81. Miss Ireland would go on to compete in Miss Universe 85,and once again she was #7. Miss Colombia, Angela Janiot, is currently on of the major presenters for CNN International in Spanish.
