The year of 1992 represented a major turning point for the Miss World pageant. It moved to Sun City, South Africa, and gained a grandiose production, contrasting with very poor presentations in 1990 and 1991. The winner was Russia's Julia Kourotchkina; however, the favorite for the crown was UK's Claire Smith, a statuesque brunette who displayed a lot of personality, beauty and charm, conquering the local crowd and some even say, the judges...(some judges claimed they did not understand how Miss UK could possibly have lost the title to Miss Russia, since the majority of them voted for Miss United Kingdom). It is believed that Miss Russia's victory was a political one.
